OSSD definition

What does OSSD mean?

The abbreviation "OSSD" stands for "Output Signal Switching Device". It is part of the electrosensitive protective equipment (ESPE) connected to the machine control system which, when the sensing device is actuated during normal operation, responds by going to the OFF state. OSSD is a term used in the standard EN 61496-1. This standard describes electrosensitive protective equipment, such as safety light curtains, which are used in industrial applications to safeguard danger zones.

What is an OSSD signal?

The OSSD signal is an electrical output signal that is generated by a safety light curtain, for example, in order to display the system’s safety status. Typically there are two OSSD signals, namely OSSD1 and OSSD2. Both these signals are used to monitor the switch states of the light curtain, and can be interpreted by higher level safety controllers or other safety-related systems.

The use of OSSD signals enables safe communication between the safety light curtain and other parts of the safety system. The states of the OSSD signals can be used to determine whether the light curtain is working correctly or whether a safety violation is present. For example, if an obstacle penetrates the light curtain, it can lead to a switch state that is detected by the OSSD signals, and the safety system can take appropriate measures to minimise risks.

It is important to note that the precise definition and specification of OSSD may vary depending on the application and safety standard, but the general function is usually similar.
