What operators must consider with used machinery

Used machinery can be a good alternative to new machinery. But what should you look out for with used machinery, to allow you to continue operating it safely? We answer two typical questions for you and illustrate simple implementation options.

Can a used machine be operated in the EU even without CE marking?

Yes, that’s entirely possible. Many machines that were first placed on the market before 01.01.1995 and since then have only been modernised, in other words have not undergone a significant change, can still be operated today even without a CE mark. However, in each case it is necessary to prove that these machines are safe to operate.

Does used machinery need to be updated to the state of the art? Implementation of health and safety requirements often demands a high financial outlay.

Regulations such as the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health often contain no obligation to retrofit used machinery. However, any components that are exchanged on a used machine must be state of the art. Machinery safety always has priority, not least in order to avoid injuries to staff. However, “state of the art” does not mean that only the latest technology and components can be used. Rather it means that well-tried safety solutions should be implemented. In this area our specialists are ready and waiting with cost-optimised solutions with maximum possible safety.
