Safety Engineers work closely with Safety Consultants to provide safety guidance on the best way of achieving machine safety compliance. A Safety Engineer increases their knowledge of general safety principals and standards, as well as developing a strong understanding of safety controls engineering.
Safety Engineers visit customer sites to conduct risk assessments, provide safety reports, lead safety design reviews, perform safety validations, assist with safety concepts, and coordinate other safety activities.
All Safety Engineers report to the Principal Safety Consultant.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide machinery safety expertise and knowledge in both written and verbal communications
- Prepare and review reports from Safety Consultants to ensure compliance with Pilz systems
- Be able to identify hazards on a machine (e.g. exposed gear/chain)
- Conduct varying types of Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments
- Review electrical circuits and calculate the safety rating of the circuit
- Assist in machine safety compliance for projects of all sizes
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable standards
- Provide weekly updates on current projects
- Assist in the development of tools (e.g. software) to facilitate Pilz service offerings
- Design safety solutions via concepts using various software tools
- Provide presentations to customers based on assessment results
- Other duties as assigned
Travel will be required up to 50%; bonus or comp time available
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates’ degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Electromechanical Engineering or similar program and one (1) to three (3) years of hands-on experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read electrical/controls schematics
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
- Solve and verify math formulas as established in IEC 61508 and ISO 13849
- Fluency in Microsoft Office including PowerPoint
- Able to work independently as needed
- Willingness to learn Pilz products and procedures
- Self-motivated, well-organized, and team oriented
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electromechanical engineering
- Competency in electrical controls with a focus in safety
- Ability to read/analyze/interpret/write business reports and professional journals
- Advanced Microsoft Office user including PowerPoint
- Familiar with safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 13849, and ANSI B11
- Able to read and understand Fluid power circuits
- Understanding of Mechanical guarding designs and techniques
- Understanding of Automation systems
