PJM is an Austrian railway systems specialist, which has set a new standard for intelligent freight train solutions with its patented "WaggonTracker" monitoring system. The system has been recognised with the European Railway Prize, the renowned award from the European Railway Clusters Initiative (ERCI). The "WaggonTracker" system is the first and only system worldwide to fulfil comprehensive monitoring functions and automate complex manual processes. It has caused quite a stir in rail freight transport.
Pilz worked with PJM to develop the control solution for the automatic brake test on the "WaggonTracker" system. The heart of this solution is the automation system PSS 4000-R, which was designed specifically for the railway industry. The control system determines the status of the brakes and forwards this status to a telematics system, which is also installed on the carriage. That makes shunting operations incredibly efficient and saves staff the laborious process of checking on the train itself, something that was required previously, even under the most adverse weather conditions.
