Operational safety

How often must electrosensitive protective equipment be inspected?

The inspection periods/intervals for electrosensitive protective equipment (ESPE) are to be determined by the operator, within the scope of the conducted hazard assessment in accordance with the industrial safety regulations (BetrSichV). An inspection must be carried out by a competent person when it is first put into service, when repaired, when installed and under extraordinary circumstances (e.g. relocation).

When defining the inspection periods it is important to consider whether the work equipment (ESPE) is exposed to conditions causing deterioration, which could compromise safety. The following criteria also influence the inspection period:

  • Operating conditions of the ESPE (utilisation time per day, load)
  • Manufacturer's guidelines
  • Experience with the "failure mode" of the work equipment (ESPE)
  • Accident statistics or accumulation of defects on comparable work equipment

Unless otherwise specified for inspection periods, e.g. by specific technical regulations or similar, an inspection period of 1x/year per ESPE is recommended. Depending on the application and "hazard level" of the plant/machine, the inspection interval should be reduced to 1x/6 months.
