Burner management systems for safe burner control

A burner management system monitors and controls a furnace

Pilz burner management systems monitor and control all the functions of commercial and industrial gas and oil furnaces - from pre-purge through to operation of the main burner - all-in-one. You can choose between two high-performance systems, based on the complexity of the requirements and the number of burners.

Burner management systems PNOZmulti 2 Burner and controller PSSuniversal PLC

As the burner controller in your application, the burner management system of the safe small controllers PNOZmulti 2 Burner monitors both the burner itself and the whole furnace, with all its plant-dependent safety functions - safety-all-inclusive.

Do you operate a highly complex, interlinked plant with a large number of burners, as is the case in the ceramics industry for example? Then the burner management system with the PSSuniversal PLC Controller is the system of choice. Application of the automation system PSS 4000 enables burner control, largely irrespective of how many burners there are and how they are arranged.

Safety all-inclusive with PNOZmulti 2 Burner - The safe burner solution

Use the safe small controllers PNOZmulti 2 to control and monitor both the burner itself and the entire furnace! With the base unit PNOZ m B1 Burner, you can manage safe monitoring and safe control of furnaces simultaneously with just a single system.

In the burner control software, a wide range of burner applications can be configured via the burner element function block, which emulates a flexibly configurable, electronic automatic burner control system.

Different burner types are included, for example:

  • Pilot burner or main burner
  • Direct or indirect ignition
  • Low or high temperature applications

  • Flexible and safe design of your thermal processing application
  • Saves lots of time during design and engineering, as you can easily and quickly implement even complex safety applications with just one small controller
  • Increases productivity through integrated, comprehensive diagnostics
  • Saves costs: up to 12 burner function blocks can be configured per base unit
  • Options to connect to numerous automation environments and communication systems
  • Maximum safety thanks to tested and certified hardware and software elements
  • Meets the requirements of relevant international standards
  • Expansion module PNOZ m EF 4DI4DORD with four safe, diverse relay outputs in accordance with EN 50156-1, for controlling a burner's safety valves

Internationally certified burner management system

All Pilz systems and software for burner controllers are certified to the relevant standards for thermal processes, steam boilers, automatic burner control systems and burners. The various certifications for the burner management system make it easier for companies to access international markets. This benefits users on site, as it allows faster commissioning of firing plants.

  • PNOZmulti 2 Burner has TÜV certification in accordance with the European standards EN 298, EN 50156-1 and EN 50156-2.
  • Certification in accordance with UL 60730-1 and UL 60730-2-5 from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) confirms that the base unit and selected modules of the small controller meet the USA and Canada’s national safety standards for furnaces.
  • UL certification for the base unit PNOZ m B1 Burner as well as the expansion modules PNOZ m EF 16DI and PNOZ EF 8DI4DO, plus the fieldbus modules PNOZ m ES PROFINET and PNOZ ES PROFIBUS. Further modules to follow!
  • UL 60730-1 and UL 60730-2-5 deal with automatic burner controls, which are used for automatic control of burners with oil, gas, coal or other flammable substances. UL certification enables companies/users to access the North American market.
  • The base unit PNOZ m B1 Burner also meets the requirements of NFPA 85, NFPA 86 and NFPA 87. NFPA 85 focuses on increasing the operational safety of boilers, NFPA 86 on minimising fire and explosion hazards on ovens, and NFPA 87 provides safety guidance for fluid heaters and related equipment.

Burner control with the automation system PSS 4000

Long ovens with dozens of burners are common in the metalworking, glass and ceramics industries, among others. These plants require a large number of inputs and outputs, which are spread over large physical areas.

As part of the automation system PSS 4000, the PSSuniversal PLC enables all the burners in the application to be controlled, largely irrespective of the number of burners to be controlled and their physical arrangement.

For these applications and on complex, interlinked plants, the PSSuniversal PLC controllers are the system of choice. In combination with I/O modules, you can build control systems that are tailored to your individual requirements.
