Design of robots: Which standards need to be considered?

Robots are generally subject to the Machinery Directive. The following standards are also relevant to the field of robotics, for example:

- DIN EN ISO 10218-1 (Robots and robotic devices - Safety requirements for industrial robots - Part 1: Robots): The first part of this standard specifies requirements and guidelines for the inherent safe design, protective measures and information for use of industrial robots. It describes basic hazards associated with robots and provides requirements to eliminate, or adequately reduce, the risks associated with these hazards.

- DIN EN ISO 8373 (Robots and robotic devices - Vocabulary): Defines and describes terms used in relation with robots and robotic devices operating in both industrial and non-industrial environments.

- ISO 9787 (Robots and robotic devices - Coordinate systems and motion nomenclatures): Describes the basics of robotic as well as the principles for basic robot motions. It applies to all robots as defined in the above mentioned ISO 8373.

- Also, at the current time (10/13), a standard for non-industrial robots is in the consultation phase. FDIS ISO 13482 (Robots and robotic devices - Safety requirements for personal care robots) focuses on the following:

  • Hazard description for the application of robots in a private environment
  • Specifications for safe design, incl. appropriate protective measures
  • Requirements for information for use relating to the safe use of robots


The standards mentioned deal explicitly with the field of robotics. Notwithstanding the above, however, the relevant standards summarised under the Machinery Directive must also be considered.
