At Nordpan Rubner Holzbauelemente in Strassen, Tyrol, the previous fully manual repair of natural wood panels faced major challenges. The process was not only physically demanding but also difficult to scale. With the goal of modernizing production, ensuring consistent quality, and remaining competitive in the long term, the company decided to build a new automated repair system for multi‑layer panels. To achieve this, Nordpan Rubner relied on a comprehensive safety concept from Pilz—from the initial analysis all the way to CE‑compliant handover.
Nordpan Rubner: future‑proof production thanks to modern safety technology
Maximal protection, maximum performance for prefabricated house production
The mission
End‑to‑end safety architecture from Pilz
Pilz took on full responsibility for all safety‑related aspects of the project – from the initial analysis through to the legally compliant operation of the system:
This included analysing all potential hazards, defining the required Performance Level, and deriving safety functions in line with applicable standards. In the technical implementation, PSENmlock safety gate systems, Door Handle Modules, and safe sensor technology were used, supported by ongoing assistance during the integration of new functions. Pilz also guided Nordpan through the entire CE process, including consulting, employee training, and complete safety documentation. As a result, Nordpan received a fully documented, CE‑compliant system that ensures reliable operation and supports future expansions.
The project steps in detail:
- Risk assessment and safety concept for the entire plant network
- Definition and design of the required Performance Level (PL)
- Selection and integration of safe sensor technology for comprehensive machine protection using the PSENmlock safety gate system and Door Handle Module
- Consulting, training, and technical support throughout the entire installation process and subsequent functional adjustments
- Support in achieving CE conformity to ensure the system meets all legal requirements
Foundation for sustainable competitiveness
The added value for Nordpan is clear: the new system enables a safe, ergonomic, and efficient repair process that keeps product quality consistently high—regardless of time of day or shift. At the same time, automation creates new, high‑quality jobs, as employees are upskilled and deployed for more demanding tasks. The system is also scalable and designed for increasing production volumes, which represents a decisive advantage for the company’s long‑term competitiveness.
The collaboration with Pilz ensures that safety, automation, and sustainability work together seamlessly, enabling Nordpan to continue producing natural wood panels at the highest level.
