What did you do before your studies and why did you decide to take the computer science course?
"I was employed as an administrator for CAQ software in the quality assurance department of a metalworking company. That’s certainly not the typical resume of a dual study student, but it is a possible one. Most of my fellow students do their school leaving examinations or higher education entrance qualification before starting their course. Industrie 4.0 is becoming more visible; the world is increasingly networked. IT is a multi-layered, varied and interesting field of work. I had always been enthusiastic about computers and so decided to study computer science.”
What type of projects can a student expect during the practical phases at Pilz?
“I am pleased about the many varied projects that I was given the responsibility to implement and which have also been put to use. So these are not projects that nobody will be interested in and will end up in someone’s drawer.”
Which departments will a student get to know in the course of their studies?
“As a student you get an insight into the departments which, as in my case, have something to do with the computer science course. Also, each student can have a week in production, in order to understand how our products are manufactured. But primarily the practical phases take place in the IT department.”
What has been your personal highlight so far in your studies?
“Working on the new eShop and troubleshooting were my personal highlight in my studies.”
How do you find the work environment at Pilz?
“The environment is very cooperative and informal. You feel comfortable immediately, even as a newcomer.”
What do you like in particular about your studies at Pilz?
"The best things are the wide-ranging tasks and lovely colleagues. Taking on your own project, and a practical phase at a subsidiary abroad are also wonderful. Pilz looks after its students and is always ready to help if you have questions. You also get the opportunity to take part in a “power week” for team-building. When you start your studies you are provided with all the essentials. You get a laptop and work clothes. The VVS public transport ticket and any fees occurring during your studies are covered."
What are you likely to do next, when you’ve finished your studies?
“Well naturally I hope that Pilz will take me on, so that I become an additional asset for Pilz.”
What would you recommend to future students?
“You must have a proper understanding of what a dual study programme means. It’s the same workload as the normal course, but in a shorter timescale, combined with the practical side. It’s not easy, but it can be done. It’s important to be well informed about the course and to bring all your enthusiasm with you.”
