Performance level calculation

Calculate the performance level using the PAScal Safety Calculator

Depending on the components used, the PAScal Safety Calculator calculates the performance level (PL) and safety integrity level (SIL) that plant and machinery safety functions can achieve. The result is verified with the required PL in accordance with EN ISO 13849 or SIL in accordance with EN/IEC 62061. If action is required, the tool will show this in the calculation. Top performance with many functionalities

Top performance with many functionalities
  • PAScal supports the VDMA 66413 library format
  • Data is displayed in a standardised format across a range of manufacturers
  • Editor enables you to create your own component libraries and to export them into other formats, such as the VDMA 66413 library format for example

Step 1 – Create a project in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1

The first step is to record the general data for your project or machine. This is either based on a set workflow or is entered directly in the Project Manager. The version can be tracked automatically with the current date as well as via a user-definable version number.

Step 2 – Create a safety function in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1

Next, create the respective safety functions for all risks, step by step. To do this, name the safety functions and describe their significance. Either enter the required PLr (in accordance with EN ISO 13849) directly or determine it via the risk graphs.

Step 3 – Model safety functions in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1

The next step is to model the individual safety functions, based on existing circuit diagrams. You will rarely need to enter components yourself, thanks to the extensive libraries. They can simply be dragged from the libraries and dropped into the editor window.

Search function for different components

The more libraries and components are created, the more difficult it is to identify the correct components in accordance with EN ISO 13849. The search function helps you here. You only need to select between a device's various versions or application types once the basic device has been selected. You can add additional documents, graphics, circuit diagrams or similar at any time, to add descriptive detail to the assessment.

Do the components represent products for which the wear level depends on a number of operating cycles? Then an integrated conversion tool helps you to calculate these values from the information normally available. The Safety Calculator displays the data required for the respective device or structure.

Of course, the tool also assesses the CCF (common cause failure). The question list from EN ISO 13849-1 serves as a check list, for commenting on the entries.

If the required safety level PLr has not yet been achieved, this will be immediately visible in the form of warnings on the critical elements. Throughout the modelling process, in the SRP/CS Result tab you can view the current status of the assessment for all safety functions in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1 / 62061.

Step 4 – Final assessment and report in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1

The final report contains all the necessary information for archiving. Its scope, design and language can be adapted to your needs.

It's rare that everything is started from scratch, so a lot can be re-used in the next project. As a result, it is easy to determine the safety level in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1!
