What is the present status of the new DIN EN ISO 20607?

The new standard is currently being developed internationally as ISO 20607. It specifies basic requirements for the design of instruction handbooks for machinery. Safety components are also affected because the new standard will be harmonised with the Machinery Directive. The current version of the new standard can already be used as a stable basis for development work in engineering. It will probably be published in the course of 2019!

What is the relationship with the Machinery Directive?

Annex ZA to the draft standard defines the relationship with the Machinery Directive MD 2006/42/EC. So the standard is a guideline when creating instruction handbooks for machinery.

prEN ISO 20607 deals with the safety-related content, the corresponding structure and presentation of the instruction handbook, taking into account all phases of the life cycle of the machine. The standard establishes the principles which are indispensable to provide information on residual risks.

As soon as DIN EN ISO 20607 is published in the Official Journal of the EU there is presumption of conformity with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the standard will be included in the list of harmonised standards. It is not clear yet whether there will be a transition period. If so, this may be a maximum of three years. A significantly shorter transition period is also possible.

What is the significance of DIN EN ISO 20607 for engineering?

Manufacturers of machinery and safety components will need to deal with the potential consequences and repercussions on existing and future instruction handbooks at an early stage. Non-compliance with the standard may mean that there is no CE conformity for machinery and safety components!

As soon as the standard is published it will be available to purchase via the ISO web store.
