Benefit from a conversion to safe servo drive technology

Schunk Hoffmann Carbon Technology is a leading manufacturer of starter and fuel pump carbon brushes for the automotive industry. The company experienced regular malfunctions after converting from a hydraulic to an electric servo spiral press. Short circuits on the PCB of the drive controller used at that time showed that the coal dust was clearly too much to deal with.  


Simple – For integration in any environment

The solution was to use the servo amplifiers PMCprotego D, which operate reliably even under environmental conditions containing coal dust – thanks to the special coating on the PCB. Incorporating third-party motors is no problem for the servo amplifiers. They can work with almost any encoder available on the market. "When we converted the first press to the new drive controller it worked perfectly", Dietmar Loidl recalls. "The motor was set in the shortest possible time, the Pilz experts were obviously highly trained."

All relevant safety functions can be integrated into the servo amplifiers via a plug-in, individually configurable safety card. In the case study: STO, SS1, SS2, SOS and SLS in accordance with IEC 61800-5-2. The safety functions could be implemented seamlessly, independent of the encoder type.


Energy efficient – thanks to safe motion functions

Pilz developed an emergency stop ramp for this application. This enables the motor to be braked to zero within 50 ms, even when it is running at the max. speed of 1400 min-1. As a result, Schunk Hoffmann's requirement to brake the press quickly and safely was successfully met – despite the high number of cycles. The ability to store and re-use brake energy reduces the machine's peak power requirement thanks to the energy storage system.
