Operational safety

Are there standard inspection periods for machinery?

Legislation does not stipulate any universally valid specifications for the inspection frequency of machinery. Indeed this would not make sense, given the diversity of machinery and the associated requirements.

The inspection frequency should be defined individually by the operator, in keeping with the following specifications: a written hazard assessment must be produced, which defines the type, scope and time intervals (in accordance with §3 BetrSichV). The potential need for shorter inspection periods, due to specific operational conditions for example, must also be examined within the scope of the hazard assessment. A longer inspection period is also conceivable – but only after the hazard assessment has shown that this is appropriate.

Essentially, inspections periods for plant and machinery should be measured so that any defects that are likely to occur can be detected in good time (§5 BGV A3).
