PROFINET is the Industrial Ethernet standard for automation technology developed by the Profibus user organisation. PROFINET is based on Ethernet-TCP/IP and expands the PROFIBUS technology for applications requiring fast data communication via Ethernet networks. A distinction is made between the classes Non-Real-Time (NRT), Real-Time (RT) and Isochronous Real-Time (IRT). PROFINET is standardised in accordance with IEC 61158 and IEC 61784.
Real-time communication of process data and alarms is the basis for data exchange within PROFINET -IO. Bus cycle times of just a few milliseconds are achieved as a result. The Isochronous Real-Time function also provides a precise definition of the start of a bus cycle. This may vary by a maximum of 1 microsecond. Precise cycle synchronisation is generally required with motion control applications.
Control systems and end devices can be designed with redundancy due to the integration of MRP into the PROFINET standard. This is particularly relevant for applications on which high availability of the plant or machine is required.
