The production system of the future - modular and extendible

Intelligent networking is a huge opportunity for industry. Flexible production allows for optimal use of the plant. Individualised products can be made to mass production conditions. Nevertheless, many companies are still hesitant to embrace Industrie 4.0 for their own production operations. We would like to change that.

We are already providing solutions for Industrie 4.0 and therefore for the automation of the future; these solutions meet the main requirements of distributed and modular systems.

We have played an active role in Industrie 4.0 – from the start

We are a member of the SmartFactory KL demonstration and research platform and participate in the development of common standards for Industrie 4.0. The platform's goal is to test innovative factory systems, in which the vision of Industrie 4.0 becomes a reality.

We are working jointly with the other partners of SmartFactoryKL on a production line that demonstrates the practical application of the central aspects of Industrie 4.0. A storage module by Pilz is used to provide intelligent, automated storage for the workpiece carriers. Control systems, various sensors, drive technology, network infrastructure components and operation and visualisation systems by Pilz are used.

Automation system PSS 4000

The automation of the future needs solutions that distribute the control intelligence and make networking of several control systems easy to manage. Pilz offers all this with its automation system PSS 4000. Conventional automation uses a single, central control system to monitor the machine or system and to process all signals. Our automation system PSS 4000, however, facilitates consistent distribution of control functions.

You can configure and program these control functions by using the central engineering tool PAS4000. konfigurieren und programmieren. The PAS4000 ensures that the networking of several control system is easy to handle. The web-based visualisation software PASvisu will provide you with a comprehensive overview of your automation system.

Modular diagnostics on safety devices provide independence

Diagnostic solution Safety Device Diagnostics

The new diagnostic solution Safety Device Diagnostics enables comprehensive diagnostic data to be retrieved simply and over distance, for use in remote maintenance for example. In this way service calls can be considerably reduced, increasing productivity significantly. The Safety Device Diagnostics package is easy to expand, thus supporting a modular machine design.

When used in conjunction with Pilz control systems, which already support a modular plant design, flexible safety concepts can be implemented with all solutions, completely in the spirit of the smart factory in accordance with Industrie 4.0.

Modular approach for increasing item variation

Increasing item variation combined with falling production volumes requires modular, flexible automation architectures. Plant and machinery must be able to adapt to rapidly changing requirements. For several years now, modular mechanical and plant engineering has been seen as the key to greater flexibility in production.

Advantages of the modular approach

A whole plant is composed of several self-sufficient machine modules. A module maps one or several standardised production steps and can be combined with other modules to form a complete process. Should the production process change or productivity increase, one or more modules may be exchanged or identical modules can be added.

The big advantage of the modularisation of a system is the reduced engineering effort. Modular systems can be planned and built more efficiently, as a large part of the effort can already take place during module engineering. Thereafter, the modules only have to be integrated into the automation system, e.g. the process control system.
