IEC/ISO 17305

The planned standard IEC ISO 17305 is a merger of the standards EN ISO 13849 and IEC 62061. In future it will describe the functional safety of plant and machinery as well as the measures and steps to be considered en route.

IEC/ISO 17305 will probably come into force from 2016

The launch date for IEC ISO 17305 is planned for 2016, with a transition period of 2 years. This so-called merger will apply worldwide. The aim is to make things standardised and simpler. This could be achieved by completely replacing EN ISO 13849 and IEC 62061, which currently run in parallel, and having only IEC ISO 17305 in future.

Which standards are to be replaced?

  • EN ISO 13849: EN ISO 13849-1 is currently the main standard for the design of safety-related control systems in the machinery safety sector. It has been published in the Official Journal of the EU as a harmonised standard under the Machinery Directive.
  • IEC 62061: EN/IEC 62061 describes the implementation of safety-related electrical control systems on machinery and examines the overall lifecycle from the concept phase through to decommissioning. IEC 62061 is also listed as a harmonised standard under the Official Journal of the EU.

What are the advantages of the new standard IEC/ISO 17305?

The merger of the two standards into IEC ISO 17305 makes a number of things easier for plant and machine builders:

  • Simplifies matters by reducing two standards into one internationally valid standard.
  • No fundamental change in procedure compared with the existing standards. Plant and machine builders who previously applied EN ISO 13849 and IEC 62061 will probably not need to change their procedure completely.
  • Issues to be presented in a clearer, simpler format.

The responsible standards committee, in which experts from Pilz are also represented, is striving for an international and economical solution for safe plant and machinery for the purposes of plant and machine builders.
