National Apprenticeship Week 2016: Nicole's Story!

Our Apprentice Nicole da Costa recently joined us in February 2016, this is her story!

Hi! I'm Nicole, I'm 20 and have just recently started my apprenticeship with Pilz UK.

In December 2015 I found myself working in a job that wasn’t exactly what I had planned for my life when I finished college in the summer..

After leaving college with a qualification in Fashion I had  offers from  2 top universities for the subject I wanted to study, However I decided that university wasn’t for me , I  wanted to do something a lot more hands on whilst earning money so I found myself a customer service role at the Head Office for a clothing company. Unfortunately it turned out to be completely the opposite of what I had expected, every day was exactly the same and there wasn’t much room for learning new skills.

When I had studied Fashion I was always certain that I wanted to go into PR and Marketing as Social Media and Writing were the two things I really enjoyed and was quite good at, however where I lived didn’t have much to offer for that kind of thing and moving to a city wasn’t an option for me, I felt like my dreams were unreachable I always knew that I enjoyed learning and actually being hands on so being stuck in an office with really unsociable hours took its toll on me soon enough!

I knew that I wanted to “learn and earn” so that’s when I started looking for an apprenticeship and came across this amazing opportunity. With an apprenticeship at Pilz it meant I would be working as a Marketing Assistant, 5 days a week, 8am-5pm with my weekend’s free and brilliant opportunity to gain a qualification in Business Admin and Marketing.  It was ideal for me and close to home which meant I didn’t have to move away from my family and friends.  From the moment I stepped in the office for my interview I knew that this was exactly where I wanted to be.  So I was absolutely delighted when I received a phone call telling me I had landed myself this incredible apprenticeship.

At Pilz no two days are the same which is what I love; I am constantly doing and learning exciting things, I am always challenged to do more which is exactly what you need from an employer and I am treated like an equal. I have been given some amazing opportunities and have learnt so many new things so far and I am so excited to see what the future holds for me here. All the staff are helpful, friendly and welcoming and the office is great so it is a brilliant environment to be in.

My day to day includes, creating email campaigns, postal campaigns, creating PR content, updating social media accounts, the company’s website and helping organise and deliver seminars held all around the UK, I used to spend my days counting down the hours till I was finished for the day and now they fly by and before I know it my day is over.  People say that you’re not “supposed to love your job” but they couldn’t be more wrong!

I would encourage anyone looking for an apprenticeship to just bite the bullet and do it, you won’t regret it. I want people to be aware that College and University are not the only options for you and you don’t have to be stuck in a job you hate. Apprenticeships are an amazing way to expand your knowledge whilst getting hands on experience- which is what most employers actually look for!
