The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently published the third edition of its Approved Code of Practice for the safe use of work equipment. This brings the official guidance in line with the latest work equipment legislation.
Although the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) and the substance of the guidance remain unchanged, the revised document contains up-to-date references to relevant publications and eliminates obsolete information.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, often referred to as PUWER, applies to the provision of all work equipment, including mobile and lifting equipment. Its scope covers workplaces and work situations in which the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 applies. It therefore extends outside Great Britain to include certain offshore activities in British territorial waters and on the UK Continental Shelf.
The ACOP is designed for people with direct or indirect responsibility for work equipment and its use, including employers, employees, the self-employed and those who hire work equipment. As well as containing information about work equipment in general, the guidance also has sections dedicated to mobile work equipment and power presses. Because of its status as an 'Approved Code of Practice,' it is highly recommended.
'Safe use of work equipment. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 - Approved Code of Practice and Guidance' (ISBN 9780717662951) is available in the form of an 82-page book from HSE Books, priced £11.95.
Readers are reminded that Pilz consultants can undertake PUWER assessments on behalf of companies that lack either the formal competence or the resources to undertake such assessments themselves. In addition, Pilz offers training courses that help attendees develop their own understanding of the requirements relating to PUWER 98.
