Pilz to speak about the use of PLCs in rail safety at IET event

David Collier, Business Development Manager, Pilz Automation will be co-presenting "The use of commercially-available, off-the-shelf PLCs in rail safety cases" with Tahir Ayub (Senior Design Authority Engineer, Signalling Innovations Group, Network Rail) at the IET Rail Safety Event on the 3rd of July 2014.

The pair will be discussing the use of PLCs for the case of the MCB-OD level crossing including;

  • CP5 challenge...464+ level crossing renewals
  • Issues involving aging relay-based level crossings
  • Drive within Network Rail to innovate and collaborate to deliver safer level crossings
  • Examples from Europe and how to certify PLCs to rail safety standards such as EN 50126 / 50128 / 50129 / 50155 / 50124
  • Thinking forwards to face the challenges and opportunities in the UK transition from yesterday's practises (bespoke hard-wired relay logic) to today's and tomorrow's practises (using COTS PLCs and software-based logic)
  • Safety Integrity Levels driving signalling architecture
  • Other potential applications for PLCs in railway signalling
  • Q&A with David Collier and Tahir Ayub

Experienced Automation Provider

Pilz has many decades of experience in the field of safe automation, many railway applications have already been implemented internationally using Pilz components and systems; control of level crossing protection systems, line control and communication tasks, functions in and around the train.

Robust Technology

Pilz PSS 4000-R PLC meets high environmental requirements and also the normative conditions stipulated by CENELEC 501xx standards, and is particularly resistant to electromagnetic interference, extreme temperatures and vibration. Applications up to SIL4 are possible with PSS 4000-R
