Pilz at “Components Special Trade Fair by Interpack ” 2020 in Düsseldorf, Hall 18, Stand 18B02 - Safe, secure packaging!

At this year's "Components by Interpack 2020", the automation company Pilz will be focusing on flexible system solutions for packaging machinery. The main focus extends beyond machinery safety to industrial security in terms of packaging. A thematic focus for the automation specialist will be the area of safe access control.

Visitors to Interpack can experience the Pilz safety gate model live and so discover the wide-ranging application options for the modular safety gate system in the packaging industry.

Safety all down the line
The modular safety gate system from Pilz includes individual safety gate solutions that are ideally tailored to the requirements of the most varied applications in the packaging industry. Different components can be combined to fit the application. The “safety gate sensor PSENmlock with series connection” can be used in combination with the diagnostic solution Safety Device Diagnostics from Pilz, offering added value particularly where there is frequent, repeated intervention in the packaging process: as a result it is possible to have targeted and therefore efficient control of the individual switches and gates.

Security begins with access control
Secure access management for plant and machinery is also essential in the packaging industry. Automation solutions should cover this aspect. In this case Pilz has on board the configurable, safe small controller PNOZmulti 2, providing operating mode selection and management of access permissions. As a system solution, the small controller works in conjunction with the reader unit PITreader from the operating mode selection and access permission system PITmode to enable comprehensive access control and functionally safe operating mode selection. “Secure” traceability is guaranteed in this case thanks to the coded RFID transponder key technology. That’s how this solution comprising a small controller and operating mode selection and access permission system ensures that production packaging cycles are safe in terms of both safety and industrial security.

Hardware for comprehensive safety concepts
Packaging machines require an individual safety concept for optimum operation, irrespective of whether it involves primary packaging, secondary packaging or end-of-line packaging. The field of industrial security – especially the protection of sensitive data – is becoming increasingly important to guarantee the availability of packaging machines, for example. A holistic approach to safety and security is required, which should be supported by appropriate hardware solutions. In Düsseldorf Pilz will be showing how the application firewall SecurityBridge can protect the configurable, safe small controller PNOZmulti and the automation system PSS 4000 from Pilz against network-based attacks and unauthorised access, particularly in the food or pharmaceutical industry. External manipulation or attacks against the packaging line can be blocked as a result.
