Hygiene Austria LP GmbH was founded in 2020. In the spring of last year it faced the challenge of launching a full production process for FFP2 and mouth-nose protection masks within just a few weeks. A safety concept had to be developed for the special purpose machinery that was used, including fastest possible implementation. Since then, a comprehensive automation solution from Pilz has taken care of safety. Thanks to safe, highly productive manufacturing, it’s not only the customers who are “well protected”.
Millions of masks in no time
Safety first when producing face masks
At the production site in Wiener Neudorf, Hygiene Austria currently manufactures around 50 m masks a month in a three-shift operation. As a long-standing partner in safety issues, SAM-Tec GmbH is responsible for the whole safety concept and takes care of the CE certification of the machines, which come from China. SAM-Tec already enjoyed a close partnership with Pilz Austria, who was consulted regarding the concept's implementation. This includes the use of guards, which are monitored by the safety gate sensor PSENmlock for safe interlocking and safe guard locking. Particularly on machines with a hazardous overrun, it offers maximum safety for personal and process protection up to Performance Level e. The safety gate sensor is simple to control via the pushbutton unit PITgatebox. The E-STOP pushbutton PITestop also ensures safety, even when the effect of the safeguard needs to be cancelled to allow setup work on the machine as it’s running. Safe control up to PL e EN ISO 13849-1 or SIL CL 3 EN / IEC 62061 is reliably taken care of by the configurable small controller PNOZmulti 2.
The benefits at a glance:
- The modular safety gate system provides a range of different modules
- The safety solution can be individually adapted
- The safety components are quick to assemble and install. Work was completed within a maximum of just two hours at Hygiene Austria
- The configurable small controller PNOZmulti 2 as evaluation device guarantees that safety functions are monitored safely

About SAM-Tec GmbH
SAM-Tec GmbH was founded in 2017 and since then has assembled a specialist team of staff responsible for the planning and implementation of safety technology, mechanics, electrics and control technology. The company also specialises in occupational and process safety, as well as CE certification. Customers come particular from industry and the manufacturing trade.
“We continuously increased capacity every month, reacting as quickly as possible to the mandatory mask-wearing that was introduced at short notice at the time. The first mask left the conveyor in the 3rd week of April 2020, which is clearly an amazing feat in that time scale”.
“We generally have to react very quickly for customers, including in crisis situations, so we always have a basic setup of Pilz control components in stock. The intercompatibility between Pilz products was also a key factor in view of the timeline for implementation at Hygiene Austria”.
